Former Mud Run Gun Club in Cuyahoga Falls, OH

The former Mud Run Gun Club is located on a nearly 6-acre parcel in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.  In the 1960s, the Mud Run Gun Club Association acquired the subject property and operated it as a gun range until 1995. For decades it was used as a shooting range, which included two trap fields, two trap houses with shooting stations, and a 100-yard rifle range.  Based upon previous investigations, these historic activities have significantly contaminated this site to the extent that it is not safe for public access. In 1995 a conservation easement was deeded to the City of Cuyahoga Falls. The site was deeded to the City in 1999, and then in 2017 the property was transferred to the Community Improvement Corporation of Cuyahoga Falls.  The property included open meadows and wooded areas. The parcel is traversed by Mud Brook from northeast to southwest. The portion of the parcel north of Mud Brook is partially wooded, with a small emergent wetland, and slopes toward Mud Brook.  Site contaminants included PAHs and inorganic metals in soil and sediment.  This project involved on-site soil and sediment stabilization and capping as an effective means for preventing exposure to lead contaminated soil to recreational receptors.

Patriot’s involvement on this project included remediation and stabilization of roughly 14,000 Cubic Yards of lead impacted soil. Approximately 10,000 Cubic Yards of soil was imported and installed as a 2-foot cap. This remediation allows for redevelopment of the site as a trailhead area for a regional system of hiking trails. Additional services included wetland delineation and mitigation, archeological survey, flood plain permitting, Section 404 Nationwide Permit Pre-Construction Notification, development of site-specific health & safety/sampling & analysis/ quality assurance and construction stormwater pollution prevention plans.

Renovation efforts have transformed this area into trails and public access while addressing contamination issues. This project was substantially completed by the end of June 2023. In the Fall of 2023, Patriot planted 150 trees as part of the final restoration efforts. Patriot will continue field work, remedial action completion report and possible OEPA VAP NFA/CNS report.
